Couples Therapy in Walnut Creek

Being in relationship isn’t always a walk in the park. It seems that as much as our relationships can bring us security, joy, and love they can bring confusion, frustration, and fear in equal measure. Even in the most loving relationships there are times when we feel distant from, annoyed by, distrustful of, or angry with our partners. People often come to couples therapy feeling stuck in a tangled web with little hope of being freed from it. In therapy, with time, attention, and effort:

  • Change can happen

  • New insights can be had

  • New skills can be learned

  • You can become disentangled

Couples counseling can help:

No one is born a relationship expert. I help couples understand themselves and look at current relationship struggles in new ways. With new awareness comes the capacity to make conscious choices versus reacting in unconscious ways. My approach is to both dig beneath the surface to try and understand what is driving the current problem and at the same time help you develop new skills for navigating the sometimes rocky terrain of relating. Therapy can help you:

  • get unstuck

  • have new insights

  • communicate better

  • make lasting change

  • address ambivalence

  • rebuild or develop trust

  • regulate your emotions

  • understand partner better

  • understand yourself better

  • improve coping strategies

  • set appropriate boundaries

  • learn new relationship skills

  • open up to love and to being loved

  • become more honest with yourself and your partner

  • bring awareness to underlying conflicts, issues, assumptions, or expectations

  • express difficult feelings such as jealousy, anger, or insecurity constructively

  • support each other through life transitions such as becoming parents, marriage, and aging
